Economy - Advocates a return to the gold standard and elimination of the Fed and most federal regulations.


National Debt - Would eviscerate federal government, slashing nearly half its spending, shut down five cabinet-level agencies and end spending on existing conflicts and on foreign aid.

Newt on Economy & National Debt



Economy - Wants to repeal financial-industry regulations enacted after the Wall Street Meltdown. Would Restrict the Federal Reserve's power to set interest rates artificially low.

National Debt - As House speaker in 1990s, engineered passage of a seven-year balanced budget plan. It was vetoed but helped lay the groundwork for a bipartisan balanced budget later.

Economy- Would eliminate corporate taxes for manufacturers, drill for more oil and gas, and slash regulations.


National Debt - Would freeze social and military spending for five years to cut $5 trillion from federal budgets.

Mitt on Economy & National Debt


Economy - Seeks lower taxes, less regulation, a balanced budget and more trade deals to spur growth. Would replace jobless benefits with unemployment savings accounts and repeal new financial-industry regulations.


National Debt - Defended financial-sector bailout, criticized GM and Chrysler bailout. Would cap federal spending at 20 percent of GDP.
